The Appointment

Yesterday was our "family appointment" with the Infectious Disease Doctor.  To be truthful, it is a tad chaotic when a family of seven has to sit in a treatment room made for two.  But we managed.  Each child was questioned, prodded, checked and double-checked and turns out they are all fairly healthy and somewhat normal.  (Although Jack was dying of embarrassment when the resident wanted to feel his stomach!)

We started out with a round of blood work, then met with the resident and then waited for the ID Doc.

About three weeks ago, Kylie had blood work done and one of her "numbers" (her CRP) was way too high.  Up until that point, her numbers had been normal so this jump to a higher number was a bit of a scare. We weren't sure what was going on inside her.  When we met with our ID doc yesterday, she told us that it could take up to four or five hours to get the results back and that she would call us later in the day.

In the meantime, she took a look at Kylie and said the words "huge improvement" in terms of her foot. She was pleased with the range of motion, the look of the wound and how well Kylie was using it. She did mention that she was concerned about this high number we received last time and that if it was high again, Kylie would need an MRI pretty quick to see what was going on inside.   We just had to wait and see what the results would be this time.

While we waited, she ordered some more blood work for the kids, so they all went in for a second poke.  She also wants Nate and I to get blood word done as well as our whole family to get TB tests done at the health unit.  In fact her exact words were, "....and when you come back next time to see me, I would NOT WANT to be you, if you haven't had the TB test done."  Message received.

I think we had the poor nurses in a tizzy trying to organize and get through several more sets of blood work, but while we were getting organized....Kylie's blood work results came in!!!  In record time -- rather than 4 or 5 hours, it was about 1 hour!  (Yep, another miracle....)

And....the numbers were COMPLETELY NORMAL!  AMAZING!  Even ID doc herself said, "Well, that was a big relief!"  I'm not sure what exactly would have gone down had the numbers been up again.

I mentioned (very timidly, mind you) to the doc, that she had said that perhaps if numbers were good, we might do an MRI this summer and she would consider pulling the PICC line.....

I got a bit of a look and then she said, "Erin, I told you this would be a long haul....but yes, I did say that if her numbers were good, the earliest I would consider would be late summer.  So let's wait for four or five good blood work results in a row and then we'll talk about it."  Alright, alright....I won't push....today.

When all was said and done, it was a great appointment.  The kids are well.  Kylie's numbers are good. Nate met our ID Doc and there was no brew-ha-ha, in fact, it was lovely and cordial.

And so we continue to wait, and wait and wait.  This waiting business is tough.

But guess what my little devotional book said yesterday (it's like the author knows what we're facing...)

This is Jesus speaking:

"You will never be in control of your life circumstances, but you can relax and trust in My control. (okay, okay, I'm sloooowly learning that) Instead of striving for a predictable, safe lifestyle, seek to know me in greater depth and breadth.  I long to make your life a glorious adventure, but you must stop clinging to old ways.  I am always doing something new within My beloved ones.  Be on the look-out for all I have prepared for you."

Message received.
